Without a doubt, this is my most unique and challenging to fabricate design spindle to date, and it is an amazingly well balanced spinning tool - dedicated to my late mother, Vida Ann, who I watched for years professionally typesetting with her IBM Selectric typewriter with its type ball element flying around at lightning speed! These vintage IBM Selectric Type Elements (or Type Ball) were used in Selectric typewriters from 1961 through around 1986
Made from 55 individual pieces, these spindles feature New Old Stock (NOS) and Used vintage (early 70's - mid 80's) IBM Selectric Type Ball Elements in a variety of fonts. They've been cleaned, prepped, and coated with two layers of clear lacquer for durability, center filled with 2-part epoxy, center drilled, and mounted onto one of my signature steel shafts and centered onto the 1.5" acrylic disc below using a specially milled acrylic disc to fit the interior shape of the type element. A vintage brass clock gear is mounted to the bottom side with the center filled with (shaft color matching) mica tinted epoxy resin - along with a stainless steel Hex Nut, silver plated findings at the top and bottom, and various size topaz AB Czech crystal rhinestones.
The shaft is hand-made from spring steel with a heat forged hook that is coated with a 2-coat hi-temperature powder-coat paint, and all parts are mounted with industrial 2-part epoxy resin adhesive. This is a light-to-medium weight Tahkli style spindle that has a fast and long spin - making it great for not only cotton, but other short and longer/fine staple fibers as well.
